Since August 1, 2016, there has been a large outbreak of hepatitis A virus in SE Michigan.

As of May 2018, more than 800 people have been infected. While many people sick with hepatitis A live in SE Michingan, hepatitis A has spread to other parts of our state, including one case in Schoolcraft County in the Upper Peninsula.

People have become very sick with hepatitis A, have been admitted to the hospital, and some have died.

We need your help to stop the spread of this infection.

Highest risk factors for hepatitis A include:

  • Use of recreational drugs

  • Sexual activity with someone already infected

  • Men who have sex with men

  • Homelessness or unstable housing

  • Recent or current incarceration

  • Close contact or living with someone with hepatitis A
