At LMAS District Health Department, our Community Health Division is dedicated to promoting wellness and enhancing the quality of life for residents across Luce, Alger, Schoolcraft, and Mackinac Counties.
Through a comprehensive range of programs and initiatives, we strive to prevent disease, support families, and provide resources that foster healthier communities.
Communicable Disease Prevention and School Health Programs
We collaborate closely with local schools to manage and prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Our efforts include educating staff and students on effective hygiene practices, implementing disease surveillance, and providing guidance on managing outbreaks to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.
Harm Reduction Program
Our Harm Reduction Program is designed to minimize the adverse health, social, and economic consequences associated with substance use. We offer services such as needle exchange, education on safer practices, and referrals to treatment programs, aiming to reduce the transmission of infectious diseases and support individuals on their path to recovery.
Family-Focused Initiatives
Healthy Families America (HFA): This evidence-based home visiting program provides support to families at risk for adverse childhood experiences. Through regular home visits, we offer guidance on positive parenting practices, child development, and maternal health, aiming to strengthen family bonds and promote healthy childhood growth.
Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP): As a Michigan Medicaid benefit, MIHP offers prenatal and postnatal home visiting services to pregnant women and infants. Our team conducts screenings and assessments to identify health risks and provides personalized support to improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality rates.
Community Engagement and Resources
Communities That Care (CTC): This community-based initiative focuses on preventing youth problem behaviors, including substance use and delinquency. By engaging local stakeholders, we assess community needs and implement evidence-based strategies to promote healthy youth development.
Michigan U.P. Trail Guides: We provide comprehensive trail guides to encourage outdoor physical activity, promoting both physical and mental well-being. These guides offer detailed information on local trails, fostering community engagement with the natural environment.
U.P. Home Visiting Network: This network connects families with home visiting services across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Our programs offer support in areas such as child development, parenting education, and health care access, ensuring families receive the resources they need for a healthy start.
By offering education, outreach, and support services, our team empowers individuals and families to make informed health choices. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier future for our communities.
