Preventing and Controlling Communicable Diseases
Despite advances in medicine and the eradication of certain diseases, communicable diseases continue to pose a serious threat. New bacterial and viral infections constantly emerge, some evolving into drug-resistant forms, making disease prevention and control an ongoing challenge.
At the LMAS District Health Department, our mission is to safeguard public health by identifying, investigating, and mitigating the spread of infectious diseases in our community. Through comprehensive disease surveillance, pathogen detection, case investigation, preventive treatment, education, and timely reporting, we work to minimize the impact of communicable diseases and protect community well-being.
Under the Michigan Public Health Code, specific infectious diseases must be reported to the local health department where the affected individual resides. This reporting requirement enables us to promptly investigate cases, contain disease transmission, and trace sources of infection. Additionally, routine analysis of communicable disease patterns helps identify potential outbreaks and epidemics, allowing for swift public health interventions.
By staying vigilant and proactive, we can work together to reduce the spread of infectious diseases and promote a healthier community.
