Additional Environment Health Programs & Services

At the LMAS District Health Department, we are committed to protecting public health by conducting a variety of environmental health inspections and services. These activities help ensure that facilities and services across Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties meet state and local public health standards.Below is an overview of the environmental health programs and services we provide:

DHHS-Licensed Facility Inspections

The LMAS Health Department conducts regular inspections of state-licensed facilities to ensure safe, sanitary environments for children and vulnerable individuals. This includes:

  • Foster Homes
  • Day Care Centers
  • Children’s Camps

These inspections verify compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.

Public Swimming Pools and Spas

We perform inspections of public swimming pools and spas to ensure they meet Michigan’s water quality and safety standards. Our inspections include:

  • Evaluating Water Quality – Ensuring water is safe and free of harmful contaminants
  • Assessing Mechanical Components – Checking filters, pumps, and other equipment for safety and proper operation

Please Note: The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) handles Public Swimming Pool Licensing.

Campground Inspections

Annual inspections of campgrounds are conducted to review compliance with public health standards. These inspections include:

  • Sanitation systems
  • Drinking water safety
  • Waste disposal
  • General site conditions

Our goal is to ensure a safe and healthy experience for campers and visitors.

Radon Testing

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate in homes and pose significant health risks. Through the Michigan Indoor Radon Program, we help raise awareness and encourage residents to take action.

  • Free Radon Test Kits are available at all LMAS offices.
  • Educational materials and support are available for mitigation.

Septage Hauler Licensing and Inspection

In collaboration with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), LMAS is responsible for:

  • Inspecting septage hauler vehicles and dumping sites
  • Investigating complaints of improper waste disposal

These efforts ensure that septage waste is handled in a safe, legal, and environmentally responsible manner.

Please Note: LMAS District Health Department inspects septage hauler vehicles and approved dumping sites. However, licensing for septage haulers is managed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

Water Sample Testing

The LMAS Health Department provides water testing services to ensure safe drinking water for homes, businesses, and seasonal properties.
