Oral Health

At LMAS District Health Department, we are dedicated to fostering lifelong oral health for children across Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties. Recognizing that good oral hygiene is integral to overall well-being, we offer programs and resources to ensure every child has access to essential dental care.

Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment  (KOHA) Program

The LMAS District Health Department also provides oral health assessments (screenings) for children entering kindergarten in Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties. These screenings are offered in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to help children reach their full learning potential.

Screenings are conducted before the start of kindergarten at places like preschools, school registration events, by appointment at a LMAS office, and in schools during the kindergarten school year.

Why Oral Health Assessments Are Important

  • Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children.
  • Tooth decay (cavities) can cause pain. Pain can make it hard for children to pay attention in schools, prevent them from eating well and keep them awake at night. All of this can affect the child’s ability to learn.
  • Poor dental heath can affect physical health, behavior and academic and social development.

Who Receives Free Assessments?

Michigan law requires children who are entering kindergarten to receive a dental assessment prior to or during the first year enrolled.

If your child is not enrolled in a formal school setting, you can schedule a free screening by contacting your local health department.

Screening Process and Follow-Up

  • A Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) will provide an oral health assessment and document and treated or untreated decay.
  • If dental treatment is indicated the RDH will follow up with the child’s parent/guardian.
  • If urgent treatment is needed the RDH will refer the child to a partnering dental office and assist the parent/guardian in scheduling appointments in necessary.
  • Schools will be provided a list of students who have received the screening to be entered into MICR and meet the schools reporting requirements.

Children’s Fluoride Varnish Program

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases, but it is also one of the most preventable. Even young children—sometimes as early as 12 to 18 months—can develop cavities. Left untreated, cavities in baby teeth can cause pain, infections, and even lead to problems with eating, speaking, sleeping, and learning.

At LMAS District Health Department, we understand that a healthy smile starts early. That’s why we focus on prevention through our comprehensive Fluoride Varnish Program. This program is specifically designed for children ages 0 to 5, providing essential dental care during their Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) appointments.

Why Fluoride Varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a safe, painless, and highly effective method of preventing tooth decay in young children. This quick treatment involves applying a thin layer of fluoride to a child’s teeth, which strengthens enamel and helps protect against cavities.

What to Expect During Your WIC Appointment

Parents and caregivers who bring their children to a WIC appointment can expect a friendly, supportive environment where:

  • Dental Screenings: Trained health professionals check for signs of tooth decay or other oral health concerns.

  • Fluoride Varnish Application: A gentle, protective coating is applied to the child’s teeth.

  • Oral Health Education: Families receive tips and tools for maintaining good oral hygiene at home, including the importance of regular brushing and healthy eating habits.

  • Age-Appropriate Supplies: Children may receive items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other dental care essentials.

Building Healthy Habits Early

The earlier a child begins receiving preventive dental care, the better. Our Fluoride Varnish Program is just one of the many ways LMAS District Health Department is committed to protecting the health and well-being of our youngest residents.
