Schedule Well Child Checks Early to Beat the Back-to-School Rush

As summer flies by, families are busy preparing for another school year—shopping for school supplies, organizing schedules, and getting children ready for the classroom. One of the most important items on every back-to-school checklist should be scheduling a Well Child Check before the late-summer rush.

Well Child Checks are more than routine doctor visits. These annual appointments allow healthcare providers to monitor a child’s growth and development, assess physical and emotional well-being, address any health concerns, and ensure children are ready to learn and thrive throughout the school year.

“Back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of year for healthcare providers,” said Chelsea Schummer, Physician Assistant and Health Educator at LMAS District Health Department. “Scheduling your child’s Well Child Check early helps families avoid long wait times, ensures children are up to date on recommended immunizations, and gives patients and parents the opportunity to discuss any concerns before school and sports activities begin.”

Keeping children current on recommended childhood vaccines is another essential part of preparing for school. Vaccines protect children from serious illnesses while helping reduce the spread of disease within schools and the community. Families should review their child’s immunization record before the school year begins to ensure they meet school requirements and are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Many parents also wait until the last minute to schedule sports physicals, creating an even greater demand for appointments. However, fall sports such as football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, and cheer often begin practices and conditioning sessions in the middle of summer—weeks before the first day of school.

A sports physical helps determine whether a student is healthy enough to safely participate in athletics and can identify medical conditions that may require additional evaluation or treatment. Scheduling these appointments early allows student-athletes to complete required paperwork and avoid delays that could keep them from participating in practices or competitions.

By planning ahead, families can reduce stress and ensure children start the school year healthy, protected, and ready to succeed both in the classroom and on the playing field.

Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s healthcare provider now to schedule Well Child Checks, immunization appointments, and sports physicals before appointment availability becomes limited during the back-to-school season.
