3rd Annual Ink For a Cause Event Promotes Mental Health Awareness in Luce County

May is recognized nationally as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of mental health, reducing stigma, and encouraging individuals to seek support when needed. In recognition of the month, LMAS, the Luce County Communities That Care Coalition, and Wyld Flower Studio owner Sydni Brodock are once again partnering to host the 3rd Annual Ink For a Cause community event.

The event will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Wyld Flower Studio in downtown Newberry. The annual event is designed to raise awareness about mental health, provide education and local resources, support individuals and families affected by mental illness, and encourage open conversations surrounding mental wellness in rural communities.

Throughout the event, Sydni Brodock will offer more than 30 flash tattoo designs for participants to choose from, with proceeds supporting mental health awareness efforts. However, organizers emphasize that the event is open to everyone — regardless of whether they plan to get a tattoo.

Co-organizer Jamie Rushford, Coordinator for the Luce County Communities That Care Coalition, shared, “Events like Ink For a Cause help create safe, welcoming spaces where community members can connect, learn, and have honest conversations about mental health. Reducing stigma starts with awareness and compassion.”

“Mental health impacts so many individuals and families within our communities, yet stigma often prevents people from talking openly or seeking support,” organizers shared. “Events like Ink for a Cause create opportunities for connection and conversation in a welcoming environment. Partnerships with local businesses like Wyld Flower Studio help us continue building awareness.”

Community members are encouraged to stop by for snacks and refreshments, conversations about mental wellness, and information regarding available local mental health and support resources.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness each year, while one in six youth ages 6–17 experiences a mental health disorder annually. Mental health conditions can affect anyone regardless of age, background, or circumstance, making community education and support especially important.

Organizers note that partnerships and community-centered events such as Ink For a Cause help strengthen relationships, increase awareness, and remind individuals and families that they are not alone. Events like these also encourage community members to seek help early and promote the message that mental health is just as important as physical health.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held inside Wyld Flower Studio in downtown Newberry.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health challenges, support is available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day by calling or texting 988.
